Case Study - Police Clothing Store
Products: Dexion Impex and purpose-made walkways
Storage of: Clothing items

The customer’s warehouse was already fitted out with “high-rise” Dexion “Impex” shelving combining garment hanging rail and shelf storage. Access was via rail guided, high-rise order pickers taking the operator up to the high level shelves. This meant that stock selection was time-consuming and while the order picker was in use the gangway was closed to all other staff.

Before Before

As the order pickers were nearing the end of their natural life we were asked to investigate alternative methods of stock selection which could improve the picking rate, and possibly avoid the large investment involved in their replacement.

Knowing the load capabilities of the existing shelving, we recommended that intermediate walkways be installed, converting the existing single-tier, high-rise system to a two-tier system which would provide access to the operators to all areas of the shelving at all times without the need for any mechanised equipment.

This involved the fitting of walkway support steelwork to the shelving approximately halfway up the uprights, with flooring grade particle board decking fitted to provide a comfortable surface for foot and trolley. The steelwork also provided the support work for the lighting and sprinkler systems that were required. These walkways are accessed by four steel staircases positioned to maintain adequate fire escape routes / distances and Local Authority and Fire Officer’s approval was obtained for the whole installation.

After

An added complication was that the customer’s operation had to carry on throughout our installation, and despite this the whole installation was completed on budget and within programme. The overall cost of our installation was more than covered by the expenditure saved in the replacement of the high-rise order pickers. The customer now reports that stock selection times have been significantly reduced and that improved access to all areas of the shelving installation have actually enabled increased stock holding capacity.
